What Makes 60 So Special?

Western culture celebrates 60th birthdays as the sixth in a series of decade thresholds. In Chinese culture, we consider 60 particularly auspicious. Here’s why: Chinese astrology is based on a 60-year cycle that reflects the nature of life in the cosmos. There are 12 animals in the Chinese zodiac: rat, ox, tiger, hare, dragon, snake, horse, sheep, monkey, rooster, dog, and pig. There are five manifestations of each animal, each reflecting one of five elements: wood, fire, earth, metal, and water. Five elements multiplied by 12 animals equals… 60 — in human years, the completion of one cycle in life, and the beginning of another. So from an Eastern perspective, the sixth decade is a particularly significant milestone — making 60 especially worth celebrating!
