Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown and former students to attend

WHAT: Angela Wu, a widely known expert in the Chinese healing arts, will be honored on her retirement as director of the Chinese Healing Studies Program at San Francisco State University on Thursday, Nov. 7 on the S.F. State campus.

Thursday, Nov. 7 at 12:15 p.m. in Room 306 of the HSS Building (Humanities and Social Sciences Building) at San Francisco State University, 1600 Holloway Ave.

EVENT DETAILS:
Wu, who has more than 30 years of experience in Chinese medicine and established the popular Wu's Healing Center in San Francisco, has led S.F. State's Chinese Healing Studies Program for more than two decades. Over the years, Wu's commitment to teaching the Chinese healing arts has inspired many students to pursue careers in Chinese medicine. Housed in the University's Institute for Holistic Healing Studies, the program offers classes such as Chinese perspectives in holistic health. More than 150 students each semester enroll in holistic health courses at S.F. State, which offers both a minor and a certificate in holistic health studies.

In addition to honoring Wu on her retirement from S.F. State, the event kicks off creation of the Angela C.Wu Chinese Healing Studies Fund to provide student scholarships for careers in Chinese medicine. Joining Wu at the event will be several of her former students and Oakland Mayor Jerry Brown, who as governor appointed Wu to the state's first acupuncture licensing board. The event's key speaker will be Dr. Michael Smith, director of New York's Lincoln Hospital Recovery Center and founder of the National Acupuncture Association. His talk is titled "Qi -- The Healing Force Within."

Wu will be introduced to the gathering at approximately 1 p.m.

A licensed acupuncturist and a certified doctor of Oriental medicine, Wu has many years of experience in acupuncture, herbology, and other Chinese healing arts. Before focusing on issues of fertility, Wu co-founded the HIV/AIDS and Chinese Medicine Annual Conference in 1993 and earned recognition for her work with HIV/AIDS patients.
